The conservative Asics Gel Nimbus 20 unveils minor changes and consolidates major ones like FlyteFoam™ midsole, the new flagship foam from the japanese brand. It should be quite difficult to introduce a new edition of the Gel Nimbus because it holds the top position among premium running shoes for neutral runners (its counterpart Gel Kayano 24 does it for stability ones), so the fear to lose the privileged position (and the revenue from the big sale figures) is something to keep in mind. As a result of this invincibility, competing brands are introducing models like Adidas Ultra Boost which is more popular as casual sneaker or like Saucony Freedom ISO which is also a premium running shoe (abundant cushioning, top quality materials, high price tag) but more agile and lighter than traditional concept backed by current Nimbus 20.
As usual when there are not many changes compared with its predecessor Gel Nimbus 19, most of them take place in the upper. Gradient Jacquard Mesh in combination with 3D print provide an excellent fit changing density depending on the area to increase ventilation and improve breathability. Plush instep slightly changes to release some pressure with more open design to bring comfort up to maximum level. Classical Asics logo from the external side (there is none on the internal) is made of reflective material developed in collaboration with renowned chemical manufacturer 3M® and for those looking for superior visibility there is available an special "Lite Show" edition to run under poor light conditions.
Rest of current Gel Nimbus 20 remains unchanged emphasizing mentioned FlyteFoam™ in midsole which becomes more widely available in Asics lineup (maybe the Dynaflyte 2 is the most significant one) while continually under development based on feedback from unbiased runners. Although drop in women's edition goes up to 13 mm (10 mm in men's), midsole configuration keeps firmer SpEVA layer on top for improved response and old friend rear and forefoot Gel® cushioning system for responsive shock absorption on impact. Stiffness is provided by classic plastic shank (Trusstic System®) in the midfoot working together with redesigned heel counter. No changes in outsole with acceptable flexibility with typical vertical flex groove (Guidance Line®) for smooth ride. AHAR+ rubber is used in more exposed areas for increased durability.
